Do my documents leave my computer?
No. Obscelis needs no account and makes no network connection: import, detection, OCR, review and export all run on your computer. Its detection rules and OCR data are installed with the application.

Is the redaction permanent?
In the exported copy, yes. PDF pages are flattened after your decisions, so masked text cannot be selected, copied or extracted, and metadata is cleaned. The copy is then reread independently; if any masked value can still be found, the export is refused. Your original stays as it was.
Can I trust the automatic detection?
Treat it as a well-informed proposal. Identifiers with a check key (IBAN, NIR, SIREN, SIRET, payment cards) are validated, and each detection shows its confidence and origin. You accept or reject each one, and you can draw a zone over anything it missed.
Does it work with scanned documents?
Yes. Pages without usable text are read with Tesseract OCR in French and English, on your device. Text found by OCR is marked as such, with its own confidence, and never silently replaces an existing text layer.
Which documents can I redact?
Today: PDF documents, with text or scanned pages, and text files (TXT, Markdown, CSV, TSV, JSON, XML, HTML, vCard). Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, images and e-mails are planned.
What personal data does it look for?
Names, postal addresses, e-mail addresses, phone numbers, IBAN and BIC, French identifiers (NIR, SIREN, SIRET), payment cards, passport and identity card numbers, IP addresses, licence plates, and identifiers you define yourself, such as client numbers.
Does Obscelis make me GDPR compliant?
Not on its own, and no software can. Obscelis helps you remove personal data before sharing a document, for instance when answering an access request or producing exhibits. Whether a document is anonymous, and whether a disclosure is lawful, remains your organisation's assessment.
What is the difference between anonymisation and pseudonymisation?
Pseudonymised data can still be linked back to a person with extra information; anonymised data cannot. Masking names and identifiers is a step towards anonymisation, but what remains in a document (a job title, a date, a rare event) can still identify someone. Obscelis lets you mask those too, by hand.
Which systems and languages are supported?
Native applications for macOS, Windows and Linux, in French and English. Detection is tuned for documents written in French and English.
